Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI), established in 1990 is dedicated to the restoration, preservation and interpretation of the history and artifacts pertaining to the railroads which participated in the growth of Long Island, its communities and industries for the entertainment, edification and good of present and future generations.
Our Greenport, NY site, in a restored 1845 Long Island Rail Road freight house, holds our permanent collection of railroad artifacts as well as regularly changing exhibits. Our Riverhead, NY location is home to the Historic Lionel Layout.
In 2003, the RMLI created a committee to incorporate toy trains and model railroading into the museum’s presentation beginning with our first model train project, a 12’ x 16’ modular “O” gauge layout that travels to public events as a museum outreach program. Our members happily run and share their trains with our Long Island communities.
Our first permanent model railroad was a 5' 7” by 15' 3” “O” gauge train layout donated in 2006 to the museum by the Manorville Chamber of Commerce. Museum volunteers enlarged and restored the exhibit and instantly, toy trains became a hit with our museum visitors.
When Lionel closed their Chesterfield, MI Visitors Center in 2008 they agreed to donate the classic layout to the museum. Museum volunteers handled all the logistics of moving the exhibit to Riverhead. On April 9, 2011, the Railroad Museum of Long Island proudly opened the new home of the Historic Lionel Layout in a renovated lumber warehouse on our property. To the delight of our many visitors, following thousands of volunteer man-hours, the Ron Freeman North Building exhibit hall now houses the restored 14’ x 40’ model railroad.
Custom Cars: To support our operation, toy train layouts and outreach programs, the RMLI produced our first Lionel Collector’s Car in 2005. The RMLI Collector’s Car Committee continues to develop two cars each year to support the Museum.
